HBO bringing Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine to TV in 2017

A four-part documentary on Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, chronicling their partnerhsip and their impact on entertainment is coming to HBO.

The series is set to be titled The Defiant Ones, and will be directed by Menace II Society director, Allen Hughes. Hughes had filmed Dre and Iovine over three years for the documentary.

HBO’s Programming President Casey Bloys said in a statement: “The Defiant Ones has everything you expect in a great story – drama and humor, tragedy and triumph. Allen Hughes takes you on a journey through some of the most important flash points of popular culture, and I’m delighted we can bring this unforgettable saga to our viewers.”

Dre had began working with Iovine in the 90s, when his Death Row Records was marketed and distributed by Iovine’s Interscope Records. They’ve partnered on many occasions since, forming Aftermath Entertainment in 1996, and Beats By Dre 10 years later. They eventually sold Beats By Dre to Apple in 2014 for $3 billion.

A number of acts associated with the duo will also appear in the documentary, including Bono, Eminem, Nas, Ice Cube, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and Trent Reznor.

The Defiant Ones will debut in 2017.
