Sony is officially kicking off plans for its Spider-Man spin-off, Venom, as actor Tom Hardy has been announced as the movie’s lead actor.
Hardy will play Eddie Brock, the first character in the comics to be Venom. It’s Hardy’s second superhero role, after playing Batman villain Bane in 2012’s Dark Knight Rises.
Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer has also been picked for the project, which is expected to be ready for release in October, 2018.
The movie is expected to be the first of many movies evolving from Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise.
Venom has been one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. In return, the alien vests its victim with incredible powers.
