One of the last scenes of  the seventh season of Game of Thrones saw the Great Wall destroyed by the White Walkers, along with Tormund Giantsbane.

Tormund was last seen with his new friend, Beric Dondarrion, as the Wight dragon blew icy fire that brought down the wall.

While many have speculated that the actor may be dead, actor Kristofer Hivju, who plays Tormund, has spoken out about his character’s situation.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he admitted: “I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. Somehow, I don’t believe it. Somehow, it looks like it’s a fall you can’t survive. But people have asked me if characters like Beric and Tormund die, why wouldn’t they show that?

“And then, in another way, it’s a horrible way to end a season, by killing two people and showing that death. So they kept it in the air. But still, I don’t know! He may be dead.”

Tormund and Brienne’s relationship in Game of Thrones

The 38-year-old added further fuel to the fire when he hinted at what could be next for his character and his crush – the blonde warrior Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), as Tormund continues to pine for her.

“Well, you know, in Tormund’s mind they are already almost together. So what he perceives… it’s very different from what other people think she is sending out,” he revealed.

Kristofer went on to say that Brienne’s apparent disgust towards Tormund may change when she finally gets to know him, saying: “But the Freefolk, they have this thing that they have to hunt the women, to show that they are really willing to do everything. And she wasn’t an easy girl for Tormund to catch up with.

“So it’s maybe something – a cultural phenomenon. And maybe Brienne hasn’t understood what kind of guy she has in front of her yet.”

The star added that if his character truly is dead, he’s disappointed with the way it happened, confessing: “I think he had thought he would die many times. But when a zombie dragon with a Night King upon it starts attacking you – it’s a horrible way to go.”

Sadly, we might have to wait till 2019 to have any idea if Tormund survives, as HBO hasn’t even begun shooting for the 8th and final season.
