United States president Donald Trump has proposed an end to the country’s diversity visa lottery program.

Trump’s decision came after it was revealed that an Uzbek man suspected for the murder of 8 people in Manhattan had entered the country through the program.

“I am starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery programme,” Trump told reporters.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Wednesday afternoon that 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov had come into the US in 2010 as part of the program.

Trump said he wants to move US immigration to a “merit-based system” and not allow immigrants to bring their extended families. “We want to get rid of chain migration,” he said.
