Fidel Castro, former Cuba Prime Minister, President and leader, has passed on at the age of 90, the country has announced.
Castro was the leader of the Central American country for 49 years. He first served as Prime Minister between 1959 and 1976. He became President in 1976, ruling till 2008. He overthrew the corrupt dictator Fulgencio Batista, turning Cuba into a one-party socialist state under Communist Party rule.
His death was announced by his brother and current Cuban president Raul Castro. He died after a long battle with an illness.
Fidel was a huge enemy of the United States, who constantly tried to kill him. He had ceded power to Raul in 2006 after he underwent an emergency intestinal surgery, the first major sign of his deteriorating health.
