China’s crackdown on the growth of Islam in the country has seen Muslim names like Muhammad & Arafat banned among children.

A list of banned names were released by officials in Xinjiang, with children to be denied education and government benefits if they are given those names.

Among the banned names are Muhammad, Quran, Saddam and Mecca. Jihad, Arafat and Medina are also among the prohibited names.

There have been hundreds of deaths believed to be caused by religious extremists in the Asian country, leading to a crackdown on religion.

Men are also banned from growing beards in the region, while women are also not allowed to wear a face veil.
