Officials in Saudi Arabia have announced that women in the country will now be allowed to enter stadiums with their families.

Families will be able to enter the stadiums in three major cities – Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.

Saudi Arabia’s sports authority said that preparations would start in the three stadiums so they can be to accommodate both genders by 2018.

“[The authority] will start rehabilitating the main stadiums in Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah to be ready to receive families starting in 2018,” the chairman of the General Sports Authority Turki Al-Asheikh said.

Restaurants, cafes and monitor screens would be set up inside the stadiums as part of the changes, it added. Up until now, the venues have been men-only areas.

The decision is part of a process that sees that oil-rich nation give more freedom to its women. Just last month, the country made a historic decision, giving women the right to drive.
