South African body building champion Sifiso Lungelo Thabete died after attempting a back flip at a national contest.

Thabete tried to attempt his signature back flip as he made his entrance, in a video recorded by viewers at the event.

He slowly walks towards the centre of the gymnasium before breaking into a canter at the event in South Africa.

Thabete, from South Africa, then attempts a backflip but fails to rotate enough in the air, landing heavily on his neck, breaking it in the fall.

His body appeared limp afterwards, and onlookers quickly rushed forwards to his help. He eventually died on his way of his injuries.

Thabete won the under-23 in 75kg division of the IFBB Muscle Mulisha Grand Prix competition held in Johannesburg in July.

Thabete’s funeral service will be held at K Section Hall in Durban on Saturday.
