Former Premier League referee Howard Webb has revealed his stance on Manchester United’s penalty claim against Arsenal.
Towards the end of the first half, Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal brought down Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia just inside the Arsenal box. Match day referee Andre Marriner had waved the penalty off, infuriating United referee Jose Mourinho.
Webb, who is one of the most respected referees ever, revealed he was surprised that Marriner had the decision.
“I think on balance it was a penalty,” Webb told BT Sport. “Was it a cast-iron, stone wall penalty? No.
“I saw it in slow-motion and the contact was less significant than I first thought.
“But do I think Monreal in his attempt to get the ball impeded him? Yes I do. I think it’s a penalty and I’m surprised Andre didn’t give it.”
“I don’t think there would have been much reaction if he had and I’m sure Wenger would have screaming for it down the other end.”
Manchester United ended up drawing the match, with Olivier Giroud giving Arsenal a last-minute equalizer.
