Comedian Ayo Makun has set another record as his second feature film, A Trip To Jamaica, has set a new Nigerian box office record.

His first movie, 30 Days In Atlanta, had set a domestic gross record with N137 million. A Trip To Jamaica recorded much more success having currently raked in over N168 million and counting.

The very impressive feat was announced by the Executive Director of Filmone Distribution Mr. Moses Babatope, at a meeting of industry lovers and the press at the Signature Lounge of the Filmhouse Imax Cinemas.

Babatope revealed that no movie in Nigeria in 2016 had grossed more than A Trip To Jamaica, and this included big Hollywood blockbusters like Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Captain America: Civil War.

The movie was produced by Makun, and became the fist movie to make N35 million in its first weekend, and N62 million in its first week. The movie took 17 days to reach the N100 million-mark, and 6 weeks to cross N150 million. Babatope revealed that these were all new records in Nigeria.

Awards were also presented on the night, with AY winning the award for Most Successful Actor and Producer In Nollywood Cinema Release History. Other award winners on the night included Corporate World Entertainment Limited for Best Marketing Campaign for the Celebrity Football Match initiative; Silverbird Ikeja for Highest Grossing Cinema; and VIVA Cinemas won Best Cinema Marketing Campaign for the University Tour initiative.

“They also told me I wouldn’t succeed in this business but when true passion is blessed by God’s grace, only success can follow,” AY said in his acceptance speech as he urged other film-makers to not allow themselves be easily discouraged.
