A Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ikeja on Thursday ordered that Nollywood producer Seun Egbegbe be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons.
This comes as he was charged to court for attempting to steal 10 iPhones from a shop in Ikeja, Lagos. Egbegbe, who gained mainstream popularity over his relationship with actress Toyin Aimakhu, was mobbed and beaten before he could escape.
Magistrate Y. O. Aje-Afunwa had led the proceedings, and Egbegbe pleaded not-guilty to the one count of theft charged against him.
The accused had allegedly run out of the shop with the phone while the sales attendant was preparing the invoice, a police prosecutor told the court. She had raised the alarm, and bystanders had been able to stop him before he boarded a waiting vehicle. He was then apprehended by police, but not after the mob had done a number on him.
The sum of N1 million and two sureties was set as bail by Magistrate Aje-Afunwa, who ordered that he be remanded until he met the conditions of the bail. A mob had gathered outside the court during proceedings, with supporters of the accused threatening to beat up any journalists who tried to take pictures.
The prison wardens however prevented a scene by sneaking him into a prison van through the back door.
