In the past 2-3 years, there’s been an uprising of a new set of Nigerian artistes. Drifting away from the typical “pon-pon” sound, their music crosses diverse genres from rap, to R&B, to even soul and jazz music.
Quite a few of them have become relatively popular in the music industry, with names like Lindsey Abudei and Ric Hassani common to the avid Nigerian music adherent. Some, like Adekunle Gold and Simi, have even become legitimate superstar acts.
One of the biggest names in this “new school” of Nigerian acts is easily Maleek Berry, and he confirmed that as he rounded up his Last Daze Of Summer tour with a concert at Hard Rock Cafe, Lagos.
Being a Lagos wakabout, I’ve attended a number of concerts at Hard Rock Cafe, and I can confidently say I had never ever seen the venue that filled up with people. Not even when Jidenna came. Not even close.
It wasn’t even that there were a ton of people there. It was more of the fact that they were huge fans and appreciated the music, wholeheartedly.
Maleek Berry had selected a couple of new acts to open for him, and they all gave really good accounts of themselves.
It’s rare for opening acts to be received as well as the entree, but that was the case at Last Daze Of Summer. The crowd, full of beautiful ladies, screamed as Odunsi The Engine took the stage, and Wavy The Creator, after her performance, earned an ovation so rapturous, even veteran artistes would be proud.
With the crowd fully primed for Maleek Berry, he came on stage and gave the crowd a performance for the ages.
A little over 3 years since he burst into the limelight with The Matter, Maleek Berry has grown from being a great producer to being a superstar artiste in his own right. Boasting a catalog of hit song after hit song, Berry opened his set with 4 Me, and the frenzy inside Hard Rock Cafe went through the roof.
As he went from song to song, the crowd kept up with him, dancing and singing along seamlessly without missing a step, a fanbase eager to show their love.
The already-insane noise levels inside Hard Rock Cafe went up a notch when Berry unveiled surprise performances in Mr. Eazi and YCee, but was nothing compared to the eruption that occurred when Nonso Amadi came on stage.
One of the more popular new-schoolers, Nonso Amadi owns one of this year’s biggest hits with Tonight, and the crowd showed him love on a whole ‘nother level. He has his own concert on the 19th of December, and that’s certainly going to be something.
Amidst all the guest performances, Maleek Berry kept his legion of fans who came out for him on their toes with his explosive energy as he performed songs from his critically acclaimed debut project, Last Daze Of Summer. He even performed songs like Maria, which are off his next project, Last Daze Of Winter. (I hope he doesn’t run out of seasons. He makes amazing music).
Last Daze of Summer was a celebration of Nigeria’s new school artistes, and the promise of so much better to come from them.
To D-O, Odunsi The Engine, Wavy The Creator (I literally live on her SoundCloud now), Mr. Eazi, YCee, Nonso Amadi, and Maleek Berry himself, thank you for an amazing evening.
