Bishop Akan Weeks sad after church collapse
Bishop Akan Weeks of the Reigners Bible Church Int’l Inc has made his first statement following the collapse of the church building in Uyo.
A huge congregation had gathered in the church to celebrate Weeks’ consecration as a bishop when the building collapsed, killing over 30 people.
Weeks himself was injured in the incident, and is currently in the hospital receiving treatment. In a radio interview with Planet FM, he expressed his sympathies for the victims, and asked Nigerians not to blame him for the unfortunate incident.
“Please, this is not the time to crucify me; I’m still your brother, Reigners Church family, I’m still your pastor. The enthronement was cancelled completely and I am not interested.
“Please let us rise and pray. I really sympathise with the departed soul. Once I’m out of my hospital bed, I will come on air and we will pray together…”
Akwa Ibom state governor Gabriel Udom was reportedly saved by an aide, who died protecting the governor. The Chief Whip of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Emmanuel Ekpenyong, was also injured in the incident.
