Popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia has been banned in Turkey, with the website a reported threat to national security.
“After technical analysis and legal consideration … an administrative measure has been taken for this website,” the BTK telecoms authority said in a statement on its website.
Responding to the ban, Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales tweeted: “Access to information is a fundamental human right. Turkish people, I will always stand with you to fight for this right.”
Also on Saturday, the government banned TV dating shows, and sacked over 3,900 civil servants, and military and police personnel.
The government said in its Official Gazette that all those sacked were suspected of links to “terrorist organisations and structures presenting a threat to national security”.
Turkey has previously temporarily blocked Facebook & Twitter in the country in different spells.
Regarding the ban on TV shows, a decree read: “In radio and television broadcasting services, such programmes in which people are introduced to find a friend…. cannot be permitted,” said the text of the decree.
