A 2-1 victory over Spain was not enough to secure passage into the knockout stages for the Nigeria as they crashed out of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The Falconets finished the group stage level on points with Spain and Japan, but had the worst goal difference of the three.

Spain had gotten off to a fast start, as Alba Redondo put them ahead in just 7 minutes after receiving a pass from Nahikari Garcia. The Falconets responded almost immediately, as 5 minutes later Ihuoma Onyebuchi equalized after Charity Reuben brought down  a corner insider the box.

It took much longer to get the second goal, but it finally came in the 72nd minute. Rasheedat Abijade sent an amazing through ball to Chinwelu Ihezuo, who beat two Spanish defenders before firing home.

The Falconets’ position was threatened after Glory Ogbonna received a red card for a second bookable offense, but the team held on for the win.

The 2-1 win was not enough to boost the goal difference of the Falconets, which was in the red after a 6-0 loss in their opening game to Japan. They however won their second group game 3-1 over Canada.
